Who's Who in breastfeeding support

IBCLC - This stands for International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. It's an international qualification, they recertify by taking exams every five years, and this is the gold standard as far as lactation support goes. Anyone can call themselves a lactation consultant, but not an IBCLC. You can check on the website of British IBCLCs to find one near you http://www.lcb.org

Breastfeeding Counsellor – Someone who has trained for at least two years through one of the four charities in Britain, Association of Breastfeeding Mothers, La Leche League, Breastfeeding Network, La Leche League. LLL call their breastfeeding counsellors La Leche League Leaders, and they run groups and offer counselling on the phone.

Breastfeeding Peer Supporters – mothers who have breastfed and undergone a 12-16 week training course. They are knowledgeable women who offer mother-to-mother support as volunteers in local drop in clinics under the supervision of healthcare professionals. Unofficially called the 'Pink ladies' in the 'Milk' drop-ins run by Sussex Community NHS trust, they can offer a compassionate ear and friendly reassurance.
